Hermann Geiger
Hermann Geiger was born in 1914 in Switzerland. He was renowned as the Eagle of Swiss Mountains.
He was a Swiss aviator, search and rescue pilot whose heroic actions gave him national hero status. He pioneered the art of landing on glaciers in the Swiss Alps like no other.In 1952, Hermann Geiger landed for the first time on a glacier with an airplane equipped with retractable skis.
Two precursors, François Durafour, in 1921, and the German war ace Ernst Udet, in 1932, had tried without success the experiment of a landing on a glacier.
Has executed over 600 rescue missions as he managed to land his specially modified aircraft under extreme conditions on snow covered glaciers.
